:: Sunday Topics
blank space

Please join us for our next service on Sunday, September 5, at 10:30.  Since this is a holiday weekend we will be having a open forum discussion on the topic of Immigration. Here are some questions that may be considered during our discussion:

1) Should being present in the U.S. without permission be considered a crime?
2) What should be done with people already here illegally?
3) Should children born in the U.S. to illegal immigrants be granted automatic citizenship?
4) Some argue that illegal immigrants help to keep prices low for things such as food, hotels, restaurants, landscaping, and other products and services. Are you willing to pay more for groceries, hospitality services, etc., in order to control illegal immigration?
5) How does fear affect US citizens' view on immigration today?
6) Some have proposed mass deportations of millions of people from the US who here illegally. What would be the consequences of the mass deportations?

We will be meeting at Wilkes Family Central at Lincoln Heights. Directions are from the mid-town intersection in Wilkesboro. This is the intersection where Wilkesboro Blvd, Main Street and Oakwoods Rd all intersect.

Traveling east through Wilkesboro, once you go through the light and up the hill you are on East Main. Continue on for .9 of a mile from the intersection.

Turn right at the Wilkes Family Central at Lincoln Heights sign. It's a yellow, red, black and white sign on a brick structure. Go .3 of a mile, through a residential area. You will see a gate and a drive that goes straight off the road, while the road turns to the left.  Drive through the gates and down the hill. Park in the parking lower parking lot that is near the picnic tables. We meet in this building. Come in the brown doors at the end. Go about half way down the hall to the Family Room, number 107 on the left.

Coffee and socializing at 10:00 AM

Childcare will be provided.

Three practical ideals for getting through the day

1. Want what you have;

2. Do what you can; and

3. Be who you are.

"Our Liberal Faith"

UU Faith is not a believe whatever you choose to believe faith, rather it is a faith in which each of us is free to believe what we are each compelled to believe based upon a free and disciplined search for truth…

Sundays  10 AM  coffee time and socializing
10:30 to 11:30   Morning Lay Led Service
coffee and socializing also following the service

We currently do not have a permanet place to meet.  Rose Glen Village has asked us to find a new location.  Some of the residents were upset at our presence and since Rose Glen is their home, the director felt that she had to ask us to leave.

We have some ideas that we are pursuing. If you have any suggestions, please contact Clyde Ingle at 973-7839.   We cannot afford to pay very much rent.  We need two rooms, one for the service and a smaller one for religious education for the kids (usually just 2 or 3).  We need restroom facilities.

Yadkin Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
Quarterly Council Meeting
Draft Minutes

January 17, 2010

The YVUU Fellowship Council convened at 12.25 p.m. at the Family Resource Center in North Wilkesboro.

Attending: Joyce Anderson, Wanda Edsel, Don Irmiger, Eva Ingle and Clyde Ingle.

Item 1: Correspondence:
Joyce shared correspondence, including: seasonal greetings from GoWilkes, announcement of an Anti-Racism Conference for February 5-6, 1010 and a SAFE Calendar.

Item 2: Review of proposed agenda.
Joyce invited additions to the proposed agenda. Three topics were added: the possible contribution to Haiti Relieve from the Fellowship, an update on youth programming at Fellowship services and new member orientation.

Item 3: Review of minutes of last meeting:
Don moved approval, Eva seconded and minutes were approved.

Item 4: Treasurer’s Report

Eva reviewed the Fellowship’s 2009 Budget and reported an end of year surplus of $4,333. She proposed a 2010 Budget and discussion and decisions followed:

1. Under charity the past budget had $400 for Our House. After discussion, Clyde moved and Don seconded that the designation of Our House be changed to “General Charity”. Motion was approved.
2. Discussion of dues to Thomas Jefferson District of the Unitarian Universalist Association. The current budget included district dues of $120. After discussion, a consensus emerged to eliminate the District dues from the 2010 budget.

After discussion and amendments, 2010 budget was approved and is attached.

Item 3. Fellowship programming.

Program Chair, Jennifer, led discussion of plans for future programming as follows:

February 7- Jennifer’s friend a shaman with subject to be determined.

February 21 – Higher ?????? Lost this one. To be amended.

March 7 - Eva will present program on the meaning of Membership in our Fellowship.
At this point, a general discussion orientation of new members occurred. With Eva’s program on March 7 as a focus, Wanda agreed to chair a New Member Orientation Committee. The Committee’s charge is to develop a procedure for joining the Fellowship, for orientation to responsibilities of membership and a formal process of recognizing new members.

March 14 – open

March 21 – Richard Brown subject to be determined.

April 4 – open

April 18- Earth Day program to de determined

Item 4: Youth Programming;

Wanda and Jennifer gave a report of discussions of programming for our children during Sunday services. After general discussion, Clyde suggests supporting funding for this committee of $100.

Turning to New Business:

Item 7: Fellowship Facility:

The current state of a search for more permanent space for Sunday services was reviewed. After discussion, the consensus was that the Fellowship will continue to use the Family Resources Center while looking for more permanent alternatives. Agreement seemed to be that we do not have an ideal arrangement, that all options are in a state of flux and that we should keep looking for better arrangements. The Council agreed and voted to pay $40 a month to Smart Start for use of the Family Resource Center and $20 to Steve Reid for the use of his facility.

Item 8: Haiti Relief:
After a general discussion, the Council decided to defer to individual decisions regarding contributions and not to act on behalf of the Fellowship.

In closing the meeting, members expressed appreciation to Joyce for providing lunch for the group.

The next meeting of the Council is scheduled for April 18, 1010.
